"The old pre-colonial cultures of sub-Saharan West Africa can look back on a remarkable artistic tradition, the existence of which has only recently been acknowledged by scholars and connoisseurs alike. Most impressive is the outstanding quality of the works of art - some of them thousand of years old - from Nok, Ife and Benin, the beauty of the gold jewellery from the Akan groups, in particular the Asante, and the imaginative fashioning of the goldweights used for weighing gold-dust. The Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim therefore regards itself fortunate indeed to have found a partner in the Forgotten Cultural Treasuries Foundation, an institution that seeks to promote precisely such survivors of an ancient West African art. "Während in Nordamerika und in vielen Ländern Europas private Sammlungen afrikanischer Kunst gut dokumentiert sind, ist dies in Deutschland bislang noch nicht der Fall.
Erstmals werden hier auf über 200 Farbabbildungen seltene und zum Teil einmalige Objekte aus Afrika vorgestellt. Darunter befinden sich Skulpturen von klassischen Kulturen wie dem alten Königreich Benin, magische Figuren wie die berühmten Nagel- und Spiegelfetische von der Kongo-Küste, aber auch jüngste Ausgrabungen von bisher unbekannten Kulturen wie Tenenkou in Mali sowie der vermutlich größte Terrakottakopf, der jemals von der Nok-Kultur, der ältesten Kultur Afrikas, geborgen werden konnte.
Vorstellungen wie ‚Skullptur' oder ‚Kunst' sind westliche Erfindungen, welche die ursprüngliche Bedeutung dieser Objekte verzerren: Auf den folgenden Seiten wird der Versuch unternommen, dieses Problem zu diskutieren und die Geschichte der frühen Sammlungen afrikanischer Kunst in Deutschland aufzuzeigen"
